Job Description

We are seeking a Techincal Design Engineer based in the Midlands. The Design Engineer will provide applications engineering support to the Design Team and Senior Design Engineers from contract recognition to post-contract completion.  They will work closely with Business Development, Engineering Support Officers and other Designers to develop tender, design and construction designs to fully meet customer and business requirements.

The successful candidates will join the business with a professional outlook and start to create good working relationships, understanding the business and the marketplace.  They will demonstrate good competency and the ability to work for others and complete delegated tasks on time. Through continuing development and competence, they will work towards taking on allocated tenders and designs in accordance with the productivity output expected from the job role.

The successful candidate will have either a degree in a technical subject, ideally electrical, engineering and/or previous experience of working in the industry in Design.  The successful candidates must hold a full valid driving licence as following training there will be a requirement to go and visit customers.  All applicants to the roles must have at least a basic working knowledge of AutoCAD.


The Design Engineer’s main responsibilities are:

  • Produce compliant designs in accordance with customer and DNO requirements/constraints
  • Understand and apply DNO G81 design standards
  • Understand and apply ENA ER standards where applicable
  • Effective management of recorded project detail in accordance with the businesses Information Management System (IMS)
  • Produce job specific cost estimates for both proposals and contract changes
  • Display suitable time and project management skills to effectively manage customers’ expectations and support project delivery within committed timescales/deadlines
  • Ability to escalate problems in a timely manner to minimise business exposure
  • Ability to recognise gaps in competencies, be it technical or soft skills
  • To promote and demonstrate a culture of Health Safety & Quality at all times
  • To comply at all times with the requirements of Power On Connections and GTC’s Environmental Policy and Health and safety policies and procedures
  • Carry out Risk Assessments
  • Report all accidents and incidents
  • Keep up to date on current legislation & regulations
  • Ensure that all relevant Safety, Construction specifications & technical data are available

  • Carry out any duties as deemed appropriate by the Senior Design Engineer and Regional Manager


  • Will have knowledge and experience of electrical distribution and have an engineering background, preferably with previous experience with a Distribution Network Operator (DNO), Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) and/or an Independent Connections Provider (ICP).  Alternatively, the ability to demonstrate aptitude to develop own skills to meet these standards
  • Hold a degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant technical subject
  • The incumbent should be qualified as an Engineering Technician with a good level of design experience, with a working knowledge of current Legislation, Technical Standards & Specifications, Codes of Practice and Recommendations relating to the design of Electrical Distribution Systems of DNOs and the requirements for the technical records
  • Must have experience of using and be proficient with AutoCAD
  • Experience using MS Office software packages, including Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Must have a full valid driving licence and be willing to travel and lodge if deemed necessary
