We are seeking a Design Engineer based in the Midlands to lead the design and tendering functions within the Major Projects Team.  The Design Engineer will support the Major Projects Manager in the delivery of compliant quotations and the “Design Approved” Construction Packs for each project. 

A Design Engineer may develop or have a technical specialism such as 11kV/33kV embedded generation schemes, 33kV-11kV primary substations; full 11kV/33kV protection, earthing and other technical specifications.

The Design Engineer will be responsible for the following:

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Business Development, ESO’s and Assistant Designers and Designers to develop tender, design and construction programmes to fully meet customer and business requirements
  • Identify and deliver strategies to deliver work within project timescales and budgets
  • Be creative in finding solutions to resource / schedule problems to maintain project delivery programme
  • Proactively report resource concerns to the Major Projects Manager to avoid short term resourcing issues
  • Accountable to Regional or Major Projects Manager for Quality, customer service and technical resolution
  • Leadership of a design team to deliver high quality tenders and design approved engineering solutions to the business.Including performance management
  • Ensuring the design work is in accordance with Customer and Business requirements
  • Effective planning and utilisation of staff to meet overall company objectives
  • Ensuring the design work by team and self is in accordance with Customer and Business requirements
  • Ensure procurement activities meet procurement processes
  • Ensure effective management of internal asset value documentation
  • Authority to approve estimates, standard T’s and C’s contracts and designs
  • Leads and supports on DNO/IDNO and key Customer Interfaces
  • Knowledgeable of current technical specifications such as G81, ENA ER standards, etc.
  • Ability to recognise gaps in competencies, be it technical or soft skills
  • Represent Company at external meetings
  • Promotion and Leadership of zero harm culture
  • Enforcement of all HSEQ compliance issues through the development of project pack and supporting the project Health and Safety Plan
  • Ensure ‘Safety by Design’ through a Design Risk Assessment Process
  • Proactively manage HSEQ issues & concerns, working closely with Construction teams to ensure safety by design and an accident and incident free culture is maintained

Team and Customers work

  • Lead the design and tender team by displaying clear thinking and identification with customer objectives
  • Work very closely with other functional managers and Construction Engineers to ensure project objectives are understood and met
  • Work closely with Construction teams to keep them continually and fully appraised of design status
  • Mentor and support team and others
  • Contribute to your team, sharing knowledge and experience
  • Liaise with colleagues across our business organisation to ensure effective delivery of tasks
  • Represent POC to customers and individuals from other companies

Skills and Experience

  • Must have knowledge and experience of electrical distribution and have an engineering background, preferably with previous experience with a Distribution Network Operator (DNO), Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) and/or an Independent Connections Provider (ICP)
  • Technically competent in all aspects of tendering and design up to 20kV
  • Some commercial experience – e.g. Contract Negotiations, Basic Finance knowledge
  • Authority to design approve or currently peer checking
  • Effective Project Management skills
  • Desire to extend technical specialism to aid the Business
  • Liaise with the public to ensure smooth implementation of work, always handling people with respect and patience
  • Proficient with AutoCAD
  • Proficient in using MS Office software packages

Qualifications

  • The incumbent should be qualified as an Engineering Technician with a good level of design experience, with a working knowledge of current Legislation, Technical Standards & Specifications, Codes of Practice and Recommendations relating to the design of Electrical Distribution Systems of DNOs and the requirements for the technical records.
  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification, lesser qualification with experience

Prince 2 Project Management or similar would be an advantage but is by no means essential.
